In case you missed my Money Monday series this morning with Lerato Kganyago on Metro FM, below is a summary of our 10 minute conversation.
Sygnia’s Itrix 4th Industrial Revolution Global Equity ETF
ETF stands for Exchange Traded Funds. An ETF is a security or type of investment that can be found on your local stock exchange. It tracks an index, a commodity, bonds, or a basket of assets like an index fund.
Unit Trusts are very similar to ETFs as they are both collective investment schemes that allow smaller investors to access asset classes which may be difficult to hold in small portions, but the 3 main differences are:
- ETFs are can be traded on the stock exchange whereas Unit Trusts aren’t generally found on the stock exchange.
- Easily accessible: you can buy & sell ETFs like shares whereas Unit Trusts are managed & are slightly more expensive.
- ETFs are more passive whereas Unit Trusts are more active in nature
Sygnia is an asset management company founded by the pioneer, Magda Wierzycka. On the 6th of December 2017, they launched their Itrix 4th Industrial Revolution Global Equity ETF.Basically, this ETF consists of international companies such as American multinational corporation, Boeing Corporation. The term “4th Industrial Revolution” has become widely accepted as the name associated with the concept of a revolution which will fundamentally change the way we live, work and relate to one another. It includes companies with technologies such as: autonomous vehicles, cleantech, drones, 3D printing, robotics, nanotechnology, smart buildings, virtual reality, cybersecurity, space and wearables, among others.
The biggest threat to the markets is definitely political turmoil, as well as, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) negotiations and North Korea’s nuclear ambitions to name a few. When investing in global companies it’s important to know what’s happening in the world so you understand how certain factors could have a direct impact on your investment.
The Sygnia Itrix 4th Industrial Revolution Global Equity ETF has a high risk profile meaning it will reap high returns but you have to be able to stomach the volatility. You need to hold this investment for a minimum of 5 years and it shouldn’t be your ONLY investment because its deigned to diversify your existing portfolio or investment.
